Department of Physics Saturday Workshop

The University of Texas Department of Physics is sponsoring a free workshop as a means to provide teachers and students with a broad perspective on topics of interest in the physics community. The Department also hopes that through the workshops we can enrich the experience of students and provide some resources and contacts to the teachers.

We will meet in PAINTER HALL (PAI) in room 2.48 (on 24th street one building west of Speedway.) (You may park in any unrestricted space on campus for free (do NOT park in spaces that say "AT ALL TIMES"). Also, you may park (for free) in either of the parking garages on Speedway & 27th St. or San Jacinto & 24th St. If parking in one of the garages, bring your parking ticket with you and ask Lisa for a free parking card.

This workshop is comprised of three morning lectures, and an afternoon session for teachers and students:

9:00 a.m.     Coffee, juice, and pastries

9:15 a.m.     “Many-Body Physics of Electrons in Two-Dimensional Crystals”, John Tolsma, UT Graduate Student

10:05 a.m.    "From Quantum Fluctuations to Galazies", Dr. Sonia Paban

10:55 a.m.     Break

11:10 a.m.    "Nuclear Fusion for Beginners", Dr. Swadesh Mahajan

12:00 noon    Lunch (pizza & sodas)

1:00-2:00 p.m.   Physics Circus Demonstrations

Lunch will be provided by the Department of Physics for students and teachers. To insure we have adequate space and materials, please call Ms. Lisa Gentry at (512) 471-8856 or email her at ugaffairs@physics.utexas.edu to let her know whether or not you will be able to attend and how many students will be coming with you. We look forward to hearing from you and do hope you will be able to join us.
