Joint Technical/Physics Education Forum Seminar
Friday, February 02, 2024, 10:00am

Prof. Jill Marshall (UT Science & Math Education Group, Co-Director of UTeach Natural Sciences)

"What we know (and don't know) about teaching and learning physics"

Abstract: What do we know for sure about effective STEM teaching? That ‘active learning’ is better than passive? That collaborative learning is better than individual? That different students have different learning styles? I would like to engage in the seminar in thinking about findings that have been demonstrated reliably with evidence- and where there are the holes in our knowledge and understanding. My goal is to consider the ways the physics education community develops consensus about how to teach science and goes on to implement that understanding, and how this process is reflected in career opportunities in physics education and physics education research.
