"Exploring Quantum Materials with Tailored Ultrafast Probes"

Coffee and cookies will be served at 3:45pm in RLM 4.102

Abstract: The advent of ultrashort light sources with ever expanding capabilities is enabling powerful new means to explore fundamental physical phenomena and novel applications. The physics of “ultra-small” and “ultra-fast” is often closely linked, motivating experiments that access the shortest time scales. In this talk, I will highlight recent trends and discuss our work covering development of ultrafast probes spanning terahertz up to extreme ultraviolet wavelengths and their application to the investigation of rapid cooperative dynamics in quantum materials. Such experiments have allowed us to capture the pairing of charges in a superconductor, resolve melting and formation of atomic-scale electronic stripes, and illuminate the physics of Coulomb-bound electron-hole pairs. Advances in time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopies and accelerator-based X-ray sources are presently further transforming the field by providing novel means to access and ultimately control quantum materials across energy, momentum, and time.

Location: The John A. Wheeler Lecture Hall (RLM 4.102)
