"Surface and Field Ionization of Atoms"

10:00am, RLM 11.204

Abstract: Contemporary methods of neutral atom ionization are limited in either efficiency or scalability.  Developing a means of accomplishing ionization in a scalable and efficient manner will enable several applications relevant to both scientists and the general populace, such as brighter focused ion beams, better gas detectors, and efficient isotope separation.  We are engaged in two research projects on the surface and electric field ionization of atoms, both of which may prove to be efficient and scalable ion sources.  I will review our approaches to both projects and the obstacles that we may encounter along the way.
