"Detection, Image Analysis, and Validation Experiments for the UT Muon Tomography Project"

2:00 PM, RLM 6.116A

Abstract: Developments in muon tomography at UT and elsewhere have made feasible the imaging percent differences in hidden material density through meters of rock and other materials. This has variety of applications, including searching for voids in large scale structures and monitoring underground tunnels. To make this possible, we need effective muon tracking and reconstruction, detector and target simulations, and a powerful image reconstruction process. Examples will be discussed, including the latest tomographic images of a pyramid in Belize. An underwater experiment to measure the low energy muon spectrum, which affects image contrast, will be described.
