"Evaluation of Oil Formations with Nuclear Logging Tools"

12:00pm, RLM 11.204

Abstract: In the oil industry, there are many physical measurements utilized to characterize a hydrocarbon bearing reservoir. Nuclear logging tools are based on scattering processes of neutrons and photons on formation atoms. These tools can provide very accurate information of formation characteristics, density, porosity, spectroscopy, natural radioactivity, density image for geosteering, etc. These measurements are combined with other tool responses by the petroleum engineer to help answer the following questions: where is the hydrocarbon; how much hydrocarbon is present; and what is the mobility of the hydrocarbon.

In this presentation, we consider the basic physics for the two primary nuclear measurements, density and neutron porosity. The presentation will begin with a general introduction of oilfield operations and well-logging. Then, the density and neutron porosity measurement principles are explained together with the description of corresponding generic tools. Finally, field log examples are shown with simplified interpretation.
