Physics Colloquium

Prof. Clifford Surko, UC San Diego

"Physics with Antimatter"

4:15pm, The John A. Wheeler Lecture Hall (RLM 4.102). Coffee and cookies will be served at 4:00pm in RLM 4.102

Abstract: Novel techniques to trap and manipulate antiparticles provide new opportunities to study physics with antimatter. Recent results and outstanding challenges will be discussed. Physics highlights include the formation and study antihydrogen (stable neutral antimatter) and studies of positron binding to ordinary matter. Challenging efforts, now underway, to study the electron-positron many-body system, including Bose-condensed gases of positronium atoms (Ps BEC) and classical electron-positron ("pair") plasmas, will also be discussed.
